Description

This Indulgent Tofu in Caramel Sauce with Ginger Delight is a luscious, savory-sweet dish featuring crispy fried tofu enveloped in a rich caramel sauce infused with fresh ginger and garlic. Garnished with scallions and toasted sesame seeds, this recipe offers a perfect balance of textures and flavors that make it an irresistible vegetarian main course.

Ingredients

Scale

Tofu & Frying

  • 1 block Firm Tofu
  • 3 tablespoons Vegetable Oil (For frying)

Sauce & Garnish

  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce (Substitute with tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 2 teaspoons Fresh Ginger (Minced)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (Minced)
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Scallions
  • 1 tablespoon Toasted Sesame Seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Drain the tofu and pat it dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Cut the block into evenly sized cubes, about 1-inch pieces, ensuring they fry evenly.
  2. Fry the Tofu: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes carefully and fry them until all sides turn golden brown and crispy, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Remove tofu from the skillet and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  3. Make the Caramel Sauce: In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add the brown sugar, soy sauce, and water, stirring continuously. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly into a rich caramel consistency.
  4. Combine Tofu with Sauce: Return the fried tofu cubes to the skillet, carefully tossing them in the caramel sauce to coat evenly. Cook for an additional 2 minutes so the tofu absorbs the flavors and the sauce clings nicely.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle the chopped scallions and toasted sesame seeds over the tofu. Serve the dish immediately with steamed rice or your favorite side dish for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For gluten-free option, substitute soy sauce with tamari.
  • Ensure tofu is well-pressed to avoid sogginess during frying.
  • This dish pairs beautifully with jasmine or basmati rice.
  • Adjust ginger amount to taste for a milder or stronger zing.
  • Leftover tofu can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
